Microscope gender selection sperm
All eggs carry a single X chromosome, while sperm carries a gender-determining X or Y chromosome. When an egg is fertilized by an X-carrying sperm, the resulting embryo XX is female; if the fertilizing sperm carries a Y chromosome, the resulting embryo XY is male. Because the ratio of X-carrying sperm to Y-carrying sperm is relatively equal, the odds of conceiving a girl or a boy are about the same for parents who conceive naturally. Done in conjunction with in vitro fertilization IVF , gender selection allows aspiring parents to choose the gender of their child prior to conception, or before a viable embryo is transferred to the uterus for implantation. Gender selection was initially developed to help families with a history of a specific sex-linked genetic illness reduce their risk of having a child with the same disorder. In most cases, sex-linked inherited diseases, such as hemophilia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy, are passed on through the X chromosome, meaning they almost always occur in boys, because males only require one copy of the recessive gene mutation from their mother to inherit the disorder.

Laboratories located around the world use MicroSort technology to help couples increase their chances of conceiving a child of their desired sex. MicroSort separates male sperm cells based on which sex chromosome they contain, which results in separated semen samples that contain a higher percentage of sperm cells that carry the same sex chromosome. The technology ultimately enables couples to choose the sex of their future child by choosing semen samples that predominately contain sperm with the X chromosome for a female or Y chromosome for a male. MicroSort technology is a sperm sorting technique that provides couples worldwide a means of pre- conception sex selection.

Different cultures, social classes, and races may exhibit different preferences for a child of a given sex. Chromosomal sex is determined at fertilization by the heterogametic parent. For humans, the male is the heterogametic parent, producing both X and Y chromosome-bearing sperm.
Couples using IVF may be able to choose the gender of their babies and women could be financially compensated for donating their eggs in a radical reshaping of the ethical guidelines surrounding assisted reproductive technology. The National Health and Medical Research Council is drafting new guidelines in response to a shift in community sentiment regarding IVF, which has seen many couples travel overseas to pursue fertility options not available in Australia. It has opened its consultation draft to public comment and is specifically seeking feedback on sex selection for non-medical purposes, compensating women for the effort and risks associated with donating their eggs and the establishment of an Australian egg donor bank.
